Master’s in Italy: Eligibility Criteria, Requirements & Application Process

The higher education system of Italy accepts applications from Indian students coming from 10+2+3/4 backgrounds. Here, we have discussed the general eligibility criteria, admission requirements, and admission process for Indian students in Italian universities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To get admission into Masters’s course in Italy, applicants must have a first-class bachelor’s degree in the relevant field of study, from a government-recognised college or university.
  • The duration of the undergraduate field of study must be at least 3-year.
  • Also, total credits earned at an undergraduate level must be at least 120-180 ECTS.
  • They must possess the required English language proficiency (if required as per the course and the university).
  • Applicants must have scorecards of university-specific entrance exams such as in-house tests, GMAT, GRE, etc.
  • They must show their proficiency in the Italian language, which is highly recommended but optional.

University Application Documents Checklist

To study in Italy, the following documents are required to submit, depending on the university and the course.

  • Academic transcripts (marksheet, passing certificates, degree, etc.)
  • University application fees (if applicable)
  • GRE scorecard
  • GMAT scorecard 
  • English language proficiency scorecard (TOEFL/IELTS/PTE, etc.)
  • Medium of instruction certificate, which states that the candidate has concluded their course in English as a medium of instruction. (in case of IELTS/TOEFL/PTE waiver).
  • CELI (Certificate of Knowledge of the Italian Language) and CILS (Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language) as Italian Language Proficiency certificates (if required)
  • Declaration of Value Certificate

Application Process

The foremost thing an Indian student should remember is that universities in Italy accept enrollment through a common portal, Universitaly. The major steps of the application process for a Master’s in Italy are:

Pre-Enrollment

  • Before the commencement of the desired course in any given intake, preparation should be started at least 1-1.5 years prior to the opening of the application window. This facilitates students to use their time and energy efficiently.
  • Depending on the course, applicants can shortlist at least 6-7 universities.
  • They should go through the specific requirements of the desired program on the university website.
  • Applicants should appear in standardised tests such as GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, etc.
  • Applicants must collect and organise the relevant documents.

Enrollment

  • Fill out the application form on Universitaly portal by filling in the relevant details and uploading the required documents.
  • After submission, when enrollment is evaluated positively, the chosen institution will issue a letter of eligibility. 
  • The competent Italian higher education institution will validate online your application by issuing an acceptance letter.
  • Applicants must submit the acceptance letter with following documents at VFS or Uni-Italia to obtain a declaration of value certificate (DOV) from nearest Italian diplomatic mission.

    • First and last page copy of the passport
    • Original Final Degree/Final School Certificate duly attested by the competent Higher Education Department and apostilled by Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India + 1 photocopy (Competent Higher Education Department attestation is mandatory)
    • Original transcript/marksheet(s) duly attested by the competent Higher education department and apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India.
