The Duolingo English Test is divided into two main parts: the adaptive test (45 minutes) and an interview + video introduction section (10–15 minutes). Below is the complete section-wise pattern.

Part 1Adaptive English Test~45 minutesScored
Part 2Video Interview~10 minutesShared with institutions (unscored)

Duolingo Reading Section

The reading tasks in DET assess your ability to understand written English at a sentence and passage level. You may be asked to complete words, respond to questions about a passage, or demonstrate understanding of vocabulary in context.

Question TypesRead and Complete, Interactive Reading
MarkingAI-scored; part of Literacy and Comprehension sub-scores

Duolingo Writing Section

Writing tasks evaluate how well you can express ideas in written English. Tasks range from describing images in a sentence or two to writing a short structured response to a prompt. Clarity, grammar, and vocabulary usage are assessed.

Duolingo Speaking Section

Speaking tasks test pronunciation, fluency, and the ability to communicate ideas verbally. You respond directly to the microphone, and your speech is evaluated by AI. The video interview section — though unscored — also gives institutions an impression of your spoken English.

Question TypesRead Aloud, Speak About the Photo, Read then Speak, Listen then Speak
