Frequently Asked Questions

Opening a blocked account usually takes 2 to 7 working days, depending on the provider and how quickly the required documents are submitted. Once the application is approved and the funds are transferred, the account becomes active and can be used for the visa process.

As per current German visa requirements, students usually need to deposit €11,904 in a blocked account for one year. This amount is released monthly, allowing students to withdraw around €992 per month to manage their living expenses such as accommodation, food, transportation, and other daily needs.

Students can access the funds only after they arrive in Germany and activate their blocked account by completing local verification requirements. After activation, the money is released monthly into a regular German bank account.

If a student visa is rejected, the deposited amount can be refunded. The student needs to submit official proof of visa rejection to the blocked account provider. After verification, the funds are returned to the student’s original bank account, usually after deducting service charges.

No, the funds in a blocked account are released in fixed monthly installments. This system ensures that students have enough money available for living expenses throughout the year while studying in Germany.

What is a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)?

If you’re planning to study in Germany, the term blocked account — or Sperrkonto — will come up almost immediately. The blocked account requirement in Germany is the primary way students demonstrate financial security before moving there to study. It ensures you don’t land in a foreign country and struggle to meet basic expenses.

A blocked account is essentially a restricted bank account where you deposit a fixed amount of money upfront. You can’t withdraw it all at once. Instead, the money is released in controlled monthly portions, preventing students from overspending early and running out of funds mid-year.

Blocked Account Amount in 2026

As of 2026, the blocked account amount is €11,904 per year, which breaks down to €992 per month.

For Indian students, this roughly translates to around ₹10.5–12.8 lakhs, depending on exchange rates at the time of transfer. The entire amount must be deposited upfront before your visa appointment.

This figure is based on Germany’s BAföG standard, which estimates the minimum cost of living for students, covering rent, food, insurance, and daily expenses.

Monthly Withdrawal Limit Explained

Once you arrive in Germany, you won’t have access to the full €11,904 at once. Instead, €992 is released to you each month.

This system works as a financial safety net. Access to the entire amount is restricted to prevent unbalanced spending across the year. To avoid this risk, Germany enforces discipline through structured withdrawals.

If you budget carefully, this monthly amount is generally sufficient to live comfortably in most German cities, though places like Munich may stretch it a bit.

Why a Blocked Account is Mandatory in Germany

Financial Proof for Visa: From a visa officer’s perspective, approving a student application without clear financial proof would be risky. The blocked account serves as concrete evidence that you can support yourself for at least one year. Without it, your application lacks credibility — much like applying for a loan without showing any income.

Government Perspective on Student Stability: Germany’s approach is deeply systematic. The government isn’t just concerned about your first few months — they’re thinking long term. By ensuring you have funds for an entire year, they reduce the likelihood of students dropping out due to financial stress. This also helps maintain Germany’s reputation as a stable, student-friendly destination where international students can focus on education rather than survival.

How a Blocked Account Works

Deposit Process:The process begins before you leave India. You choose a provider, create an account online, and transfer the required blocked account amount of €11,904. This transfer typically happens via international bank transfer (SWIFT) or through payment platforms like Flywire, Cohort Go, or Transfermate.Once the funds are received, you get a blocking confirmation certificate — a document that is essential for your visa application.

Withdrawal Mechanism in Germany: After arriving in Germany, you activate your account and link it to a local bank account. From there, the system automatically releases your monthly allowance. The process is seamless but does require proper setup. Missing a step can delay your access to funds, which is the last thing you want when settling into a new country
