GRE Exam Pattern

The GRE test consists of 3 sections, each with a different number of questions. This includes analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning. The duration of GRE exam is 1 hour 58 minutes (new short format)

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning analyses the written material and articulates information from it

27 questions – 41 minutes

  • Verbal Reasoning consists of 3 types of questions
  • Consists of questions about reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence
  • 12 questions in the first section and 15 questions in the second questions.
  • 12 questions in 18 minutes and 15 questions in 23 minutes

Quantitative Reasoning

The quantitative reasoning section evaluates the candidate’s basic mathematical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and data interpretation

27 questions- 47 minutes

  • Quantitative Reasoning consists of 2 types of questions
  • 12 questions in the first sub-section and 15 questions in the second sub-section
  • 12 questions in 21 minutes and 15 questions in 26 minutes
  • Questions in this section are based on algebra, arithmetic, geometry, data analysis

Analytical Writing

The analytical writing section evaluates the candidate’s critical thinking skills and analytical writing skills

2 essays – 60 minutes

  • AWA evaluates critical thinking and analytical writing skills of the test-takers
  • Doesn’t assess specific content knowledge
  • Candidates are required to complete an ‘analyse an issue’ task
  • They are required to analyse the descriptive issue and write an argument in essay form with reasons and examples

GRE Exam Dates

The GRE general test costs around INR 22,550/-  per registration for both home and test centre formats.

You can take the GRE up to 5 times in a 12-month period, with a minimum 21-day gap between attempts. There is no lifetime limit on the number of attempts.

A good GRE score depends on the program you are considering applying for. However, an overall score of 320 or more is considered competitive enough to demonstrate the aptitude required for the course
