Exam Format

IELTS Exam Pattern

The IELTS exam is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes long. It assesses the test taker’s proficiency in English across four key skills: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

Reading

IELTS Reading evaluates your comprehension of written texts.

40 Questions – 60 minutes

  • 3 passages with a total of 40 questions.
  • Texts from books, journals, and newspapers.
  • No extra time is given.
  • Spelling/grammar errors incur negative marking.

Writing

IELTS Writing evaluates your ability to express logical ideas.

2 Tasks – 60 minutes

  • Support your answers with examples and logical reasoning.​
  • Task 1 is a 150-word analysis of a graph/chart in 20 mins.​
  • Task 2 is a 250-word essay to be completed in 40 minutes.​

Listening

IELTS Listening assesses your ability to listen to conversations.

40 Questions – 30 minutes

  • Test takers will hear 4 audio recordings.
  • Includes monologues and group conversations.​
  • Each recording plays once and has a unique context and accent.
  • Answers recorded separately

Speaking

IELTS Speaking tests your ability to engage in diverse discussions.

3 Parts – 11 to 14 minutes

  • Face-to-face conversation with examiner.
  • Part 1 involves a general introduction session.
  • Part 2 is a 3–4 min talk on an allotted topic.
  • Part 3 is a 2–3 min topic discussion with the examiner.
