Registering for IELTS is your first official step towards studying, working, or migrating abroad. Conducted by IDP and the British Council across 140+ countries, the IELTS exam can be booked online in under 20 minutes. This guide covers everything you need — eligibility, documents, fees, test formats, and step-by-step registration — so you can book with confidence and avoid common mistakes.

How to Register for IELTS Online — Step by Step

Online registration is the quickest, most convenient, and most popular method in 2026, offering real-time seat availability, instant digital confirmation, and 24/7 access. The entire process takes approximately 15–20 minutes.

  1. Visit the Official Registration Portal
Go to ielts.idp.com (international) or ieltsidpindia.com (India), or takeielts.britishcouncil.org. Ensure you are on the official website — avoid third-party booking platforms.

  2. Create an Account or Log In
New users must create a Test Taker account by entering your name (as on passport), email address, phone number, date of birth, nationality, and address. Existing users can log in directly to the Test Taker Portal.

  3. Select Your Test Type and Format
Choose between IELTS Academic, General Training, IELTS for UKVI, or Life Skills. Then choose your format — Computer-delivered (strongly recommended in 2026) or Paper-based (being phased out from mid-2026).

  4. Choose Your Test Centre and City
Select your preferred city from the dropdown or map. Review available test centres based on location, accessibility, and available dates. In India, all IELTS centres are managed by IDP.

  5. Select Your Test Date and Time Slot
Browse available dates for your chosen centre. Peak season dates (June–August, December–January) fill up faster — book 4–6 weeks in advance. Off-peak months (February–April, September–November) typically have more flexible availability.

  6. Fill in the Registration Form
Enter all personal details including your full name (exactly as on passport), passport number, date of birth, nationality, and the purpose of taking IELTS (study, work, migration, etc.).

  7. Upload Your Passport Copy
Upload a clear, scanned digital image of your passport’s main information page. Blurry or incomplete scans may delay processing.

  8. Select Score Recipients (Optional)
You may select up to 5 universities or organisations to receive your score report — the first 5 are free of charge. You can also do this after receiving results.

  9. Pay the Registration Fee
Pay securely using your preferred method (credit/debit card, UPI, net banking). Full payment must be made upfront — no instalments are permitted. Keep the payment receipt for your records.

  10. Receive Booking Confirmation
Upon successful payment, you receive an immediate digital confirmation via email and SMS with your test date, time, venue, and candidate number. Save this for test day.

  • Visit the nearest IDP branch with your valid passport and payment method
  • A staff member will assist you in completing the registration on the office computers
  • Payment can be made via demand draft, debit/credit card, or cash at the centre (methods vary by branch)
  • Your seat is confirmed immediately upon payment
  • You will receive a confirmation email/SMS with your test details

Common Registration Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing the wrong test type: Confirm whether your target university or visa authority requires Academic or General Training before booking — this cannot easily be changed after registration.
  • Name mismatch with passport: Enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport. Even a small spelling error can cause serious problems on test day.
  • Booking too late: Peak season slots fill up weeks in advance. Always book at least 4–6 weeks ahead to secure your preferred date and centre.
  • Not saving payment confirmation: Always screenshot or save your payment receipt. Without it, disputes and refund requests become much harder to process.
  • Registering on unofficial websites: Always register on the official IDP or British Council portal. Third-party platforms may charge extra fees or be fraudulent.
  • Ignoring the cancellation window: If you need to cancel, do it more than 5 weeks before your test date to be eligible for a partial refund.
  • Applying for the wrong format: With paper-based tests being phased out, selecting computer-delivered ensures you also get access to the One Skill Retake option.
