TOEFL Results & Scoring

The TOEFL iBT does not have a simple pass or fail outcome. Instead, test-takers receive a scaled score for each of the four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — which are then added together to produce a Total Score. Scores are reported on a scale of 0 to 120, and there is no negative marking, so candidates should always attempt every question.

TOEFL Section Score Ranges & What They Mean

Each of the four TOEFL iBT sections is scored on a scale of 0 to 30. Your Total Score is simply the sum of these four section scores, giving a maximum of 120.

SectionScore RangePerformance LevelBrief Description
Reading0 – 30Advanced (24–30) / High-Intermediate (18–23) / Low-Intermediate (4–17)Ability to understand academic texts at university level

How the Total TOEFL Score Is Calculated

Calculating your TOEFL iBT Total Score is straightforward. Each of the four sections contributes equally — 0 to 30 points — making the total a simple addition rather than a weighted average (unlike some other standardised tests). There is no rounding process involved; you receive your exact combined total.

Speaking & Writing — How These Sections Are Scored

Unlike Reading and Listening — which are scored entirely by automated systems — the Speaking and Writing sections involve both AI-based scoring (e-rater) and human expert raters. Each response is evaluated against clearly defined criteria, and scores from multiple raters are averaged to produce a fair final section score.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the total score range for the TOEFL iBT?
The TOEFL iBT Total Score ranges from 0 to 120. This is calculated by adding the scores from all four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — each of which is scored on a scale of 0 to 30. There is no separate pass or fail mark; institutions set their own minimum score requirements depending on the programme and entry level.

Official TOEFL iBT results are typically available within 4 to 8 days after your test date. You can check your scores by logging into your ETS My TOEFL account. Unofficial scores for Reading and Listening are shown on-screen immediately after your test at the test centre, but these are preliminary and should not be submitted to institutions.

Yes, the TOEFL Home Edition is accepted by more than 12,000 institutions across over 160 countries, including top universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Europe. Since the scores are identical to those from the standard TOEFL iBT, there is no distinction made by institutions between the two. However, it is always advisable to confirm the acceptance policy of your specific target institution before registering.

TOEFL iBT scores are valid for 2 years from the date of your test. After the 2-year period, ETS will no longer send those score reports to institutions. It is important to plan your test date carefully so that your scores remain valid at the time of your application or visa submission.

A score of 100 or above is generally considered a strong result and meets the entry requirements for most reputable universities in the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia. For highly competitive programmes such as medicine, law, or MBA courses at top-ranked institutions, a score of 110 or above may be expected. Always check the specific requirements of each institution directly, as score thresholds vary.

Yes, you can send additional score reports to universities after your test date through your ETS account. On the day of your test, you can designate up to 4 institutions to receive your scores for free. For any additional recipients beyond those 4, a fee applies per institution. These additional score reports can be requested at any time as long as your scores remain within the 2-year validity window.

Unofficial scores are the preliminary Reading and Listening results displayed on your screen immediately after the test at the testing centre. These are computer-generated estimates and do not include Speaking and Writing scores. Official scores — which cover all four sections — are released 4 to 8 days later via your ETS account and are the only scores accepted by universities and other institutions.
