The DET syllabus is built around four proficiency subscores. Each subscore reflects a combination of tasks and is reported alongside the overall score. Institutions may set thresholds for individual subscores.
| Subscore | Skills Measured | Score Range |
|---|---|---|
| Literacy | Reading and writing ability — understanding written text and producing accurate written responses | 10–160 |
| Comprehension | Listening and reading — understanding spoken and written English across contexts | 10–160 |
| Conversation | Listening and speaking — ability to follow and take part in natural spoken exchanges | 10–160 |
| Production | Writing and speaking — expressing ideas clearly and fluently in both modes | 10–160 |
The DET uses a variety of adaptive question formats. Some sections are scored and affect your results, while others — like the video interview and writing sample — are shared with institutions but not included in the numeric score.
Read Aloud – Read a sentence displayed on screen and speak it clearly
Interactive Listening – Listen to a recorded conversation and answer follow-up questions about it
Writing Sample – A longer open-ended writing response (unscored; shared with institutions)
Speaking Sample / Video Interview – Answer open-ended questions in a video format (unscored; shared with institutions)
