CAS vs Unconditional Offer: What UK Students Must Know

  • The CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a unique electronic reference number required to apply for a UK Student Visa.
  • The CAS contributes 50 out of 70 points required under the UK Student Visa points-based system in 2026.
  • A university issues a CAS only after your offer is unconditional — a conditional offer letter alone is not accepted for a visa application.

When you apply to a UK university, your inbox starts filling up with offer letters, emails from admissions teams, and terms you have probably never seen before. Two of the most misunderstood terms are the unconditional offer and the CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). They are not the same thing, and confusing one for the other can seriously delay your visa.

In this blog, we will cover what each one means, how they connect to your UK Student Visa, and exactly what you need to do at every stage.

What Is a Conditional Offer?

Most Indian students receive a conditional offer first after applying to a UK university. It is not a rejection and not a final confirmation — it sits right in the middle.

A conditional offer means the university has provisionally selected you for the programme, subject to you meeting certain stated requirements. These typically include:

  • Achieving a minimum grade or percentage in your final degree (commonly 55% or a 2:2 equivalent for Masters programmes)
  • Submitting a valid English language test score at B2 level or above — mandatory for all degree-level courses in the UK from 8 January 2026 — through IELTS UKVI, TOEFL iBT, or PTE Academic UKVI
  • Providing final transcripts, degree certificates, or mark sheets
  • Submitting additional documents such as references, a portfolio, or a work experience certificate

What Is an Unconditional Offer?

An unconditional offer is the confirmation that your place on the course is secured. The university has reviewed your full profile and is satisfied that you meet every entry requirement.

You do not need to provide any further academic proof. This type of offer is typically given to students who have already completed their degree, submitted all documents at the time of application, and met the English language requirement upfront. Some universities also issue an unconditional offer when a strong professional background clearly meets their stated criteria.

What Is a CAS?

A CAS is an electronic document that your college, school, or university issues after they make you an unconditional offer for your course of study. It is stored on a database that the Home Office can see. Your student sponsor will send you a unique CAS reference number, which you will need to enter on your online Student Route application.

Your CAS record contains:

  • Your full name, date of birth, nationality, and passport number
  • Course title, level, start date, and end date
  • Total tuition fees and any amounts already paid
  • Your English language test scores or confirmation of language assessment
  • Your university’s sponsor licence number

UKVI rules for international students require applicants to score 70 points across three categories: a valid CAS from a licensed sponsor (50 points), proof of sufficient funds (10 points), and English language proficiency (10 points). The CAS alone contributes 50 of these 70 points, making it the single most important document in your entire Student Visa application.

The Exact Sequence: From Offer to Visa

This is where students most commonly get confused. The steps are sequential and you cannot skip any stage

1Receive conditional offer from university
2Meet all stated conditions (grades, IELTS at B2+, documents)
3Offer converts to unconditional

How Long Does It Take to Get a CAS?

After you accept your unconditional offer and pay the required deposit, most UK universities issue the CAS within 5 to 20 working days after document submission.

Important points to note:

  • A CAS number is valid for use for 6 months from the date it was issued. It can be used only once for a single application.
  • The earliest you can apply for a Student Visa from outside the UK is 6 months before your course start date.

The university has a finite allocation from UKVI, so it is strongly recommended that you complete all requirements as early as possible.

Graduate Route: What Happens After You Graduate

If your course has finished, you can switch to a Graduate visa: 2 years if applying by 31 December 2026, or 18 months if applying from 1 January 2027 onwards. Doctoral graduates receive 3 years regardless of application date.

Key Takeaways

Getting into a UK university is a step-by-step process and the difference between a conditional offer, an unconditional offer, and a CAS matters at every stage. A conditional offer means your seat is provisional. An unconditional offer confirms your place. The CAS is your gateway to the UK Student Visa, issued only after your offer is unconditional and your deposit is paid.

Your CAS is a unique reference number valid for six months from issue, usable only once, and contributes 50 of the 70 points required for your UK Student Visa. From 8 January 2026, B2-level English is mandatory for all degree-level applications. Universities have a limited CAS allocation from UKVI and starting early protects your place.

A conditional offer requires you to meet specific academic or language conditions before your place is confirmed, whereas an unconditional offer means all requirements have already been met and your seat is secured.

No — you can only apply for a UK Student Visa after your university issues a CAS number, which is released only once your offer becomes unconditional.

A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a unique electronic reference number issued by your UK university and contributes 50 of the 70 points required for a UK Student Visa application.

Most UK universities issue a CAS within 5 to 20 working days after your unconditional offer is confirmed and your tuition deposit has been paid.

A CAS is valid for six months from the date of issue and can only be used once for a single UK Student Visa application.

If you do not fulfil the stated conditions by the university’s deadline, the university may withdraw your offer and your seat may be given to another applicant.

Yes — most UK universities require a tuition deposit of £2,000 to £5,000 (approximately ₹2.2L to ₹5.5L) before they release your CAS number.

From 8 January 2026, B2-level English proficiency is mandatory for all degree-level UK Student Visa applications, assessed through a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test such as IELTS UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI.

You must show funds covering your outstanding course fees plus £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month outside London for up to 9 months, held in your bank account for 28 consecutive days before applying.

An unconditional offer simply means you have already met all entry requirements — neither offer type reflects the quality or prestige of the programme you are admitted to.
