The IELTS exam does not have a pass or fail result. Candidates receive band scores from 0–9 for each section, which are averaged into an Overall Band Score. Scores are given in whole or half bands (e.g. 6.0 or 6.5). There is no negative marking, so candidates should attempt every question.

Both sections contain 40 questions, and each correct answer earns 1 raw mark. The raw score is then converted to a band score using IELTS conversion tables. Note that General Training Reading requires slightly more correct answers than Academic Reading for the same band, because its texts are easier.

Writing is assessed by trained and certified IELTS examiners. Each task is assessed independently. Task 2 carries twice the marks of Task 1. Both tasks are graded on four equally weighted criteria (25% each):
| Criterion | What Is Assessed |
|---|---|
| Task Achievement / Task Response | How fully and accurately the task is addressed; quality and development of ideas |
| Coherence and Cohesion | Logical organisation of ideas; paragraphing; use of cohesive devices and linking words |
| Lexical Resource | Range, accuracy, and appropriacy of vocabulary used |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | Variety and accuracy of sentence structures and grammar |
The Speaking test is recorded and assessed by certified examiners on four equally weighted criteria (25% each):
| Criterion | What Is Assessed |
|---|---|
| Fluency and Coherence | Ability to speak at a natural pace without long pauses; logical flow of ideas |
| Lexical Resource | Vocabulary range, accuracy, and ability to paraphrase effectively |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | Variety and correctness of grammar structures used in speech |
| Pronunciation | Clarity, word stress, sentence intonation, and overall intelligibility |
