IELTS Results & Scoring

IETLS logo
The IELTS scoring system uses an internationally recognised 9-band scale that measures your English proficiency across four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Overview of the IELTS Scoring System

The IELTS exam does not have a pass or fail result. Candidates receive band scores from 0–9 for each section, which are averaged into an Overall Band Score. Scores are given in whole or half bands (e.g. 6.0 or 6.5). There is no negative marking, so candidates should attempt every question.

Listening & Reading — Raw Score Conversion

Both sections contain 40 questions, and each correct answer earns 1 raw mark. The raw score is then converted to a band score using IELTS conversion tables. Note that General Training Reading requires slightly more correct answers than Academic Reading for the same band, because its texts are easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
Your Overall Band Score is the average of your four section scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — rounded to the nearest whole or half band. If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, while 6.75 becomes 7.0.

Results are available within 3–5 days for computer-based tests and 13 days for paper-based tests. IELTS Online results are typically available within 1–8 days. Results can be viewed on your Test Taker Portal, and the official Test Report Form (TRF) is issued shortly after.

The TRF is the official document confirming your IELTS result. It shows your individual scores for all four sections and your Overall Band Score, along with your personal details and test date. It is valid for two years and is recognised by over 11,000 organisations worldwide. The first 5 copies sent to institutions are free of charge.

A “good” score depends entirely on your goal. Most undergraduate university programmes require a minimum of 6.0–6.5, while postgraduate programmes often need 6.5–7.0. Immigration pathways such as Canada’s Express Entry or Australia’s skilled migration typically require 6.0–7.0. Band 7 and above is generally considered a strong result recognised by top institutions globally.

The One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you retake any single section — Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking — without resitting the full exam. It is available to candidates who took IELTS on Computer, must be completed within 60 days of the original test, and is available in most countries except the United States. You keep both TRFs and choose which one to submit. It is also approved for UK visa and immigration (UKVI) purposes.
