GMAT Percentiles

GMAT scores are percentile-ranked. A percentile indicates the proportion of test-takers who scored lower than you over the previous three years. Higher percentiles reflect stronger relative performance.

How Overall Score Is Calculated

Section Weighting

The Total Score is derived from performance across all three sections. Each section is scored on a scale of 60–90, and a proprietary algorithm converts the three section scores into the 205–805 Total Score. All three sections carry equal weight.

Adaptive Testing & Score Algorithm

The GMAT Focus Edition uses computer-adaptive testing (CAT) within each section. The difficulty of questions adjusts based on your responses. Answering correctly leads to harder questions; incorrect answers result in easier ones. Your final section score reflects both the number of correct answers and the difficulty level of the questions attempted.

How to Check Your GMAT Results

After completing the exam, you receive an unofficial score on-screen before you leave the test centre. You choose at that point whether to accept or cancel your score — a cancelled score cannot be reinstated later.

Your official score report is delivered through your mba.com account. Here are the steps to access it:

  1. Log in to your mba.com account at mba.com
  2. Navigate to “My Account” and select “GMAT Scores”
  3. View your Total Score, section scores, and percentile rankings
  4. Download your Official Score Report (PDF) for applications
  5. Send scores directly to institutions via the score-sending tool — 5 free score reports are included

Score Cancellation & Reinstatement

You may cancel your score either at the test centre (before viewing it) or within 72 hours after the exam via your mba.com account. If cancelled at the centre, you will not see your unofficial score.

A cancelled score can be reinstated within 4 years and 11 months of the test date for a fee of USD 50. Reinstated scores become part of your score history visible to schools.

GMAT Score Validity

GMAT scores are valid for 5 years from the date the exam is taken. Most business schools accept scores within this window, though a few top programmes prefer more recent results. Always check individual school policies.

Good vs Average GMAT Score

A “good” score depends on the schools you are targeting. Generally, a Total Score of 655 or above places you in the competitive range for most top global MBA programmes. For M7 schools (Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, etc.), the average score is typically 730 or higher.
