PTE Exam Pattern

The PTE exam is approximately 2 hours long. It assesses the test taker’s proficiency in English across four key skills: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

Reading

The reading section of the PTE exam evaluates the test taker’s ability to read and analyse texts

5 Questions – 29-30 minutes

  • It measures how well a test taker can interpret academic-level content.
  • The question types include fill-in-the-blanks, multiple choice, multiple answers, re-order and arranging paragraphs, multiple choice, and single answer
  • The difficulty level of this section is based on performance in the previous section.
  • Some questions carry negative marking

Listening

The listening section of the PTE exam assesses listening and comprehension skills.

8 Questions – 29-30 minutes

  • The questions are based on audio or video clips, which play once.
  • This includes summarisation of spoken text, multiple choice answers, fill in the blanks, highlight correct summary, multiple choice, single answer, select missing word
  • Exposes test takers to various English-speaking accents.
  • May have negative marking.

Speaking & Writing

The speaking and writing section evaluates both the spoken and written English skills of the test takers.

7 Tasks – 54-67 minutes

  • Contains a total of 7 different tasks to be completed within 54-67 minutes.
  • Includes a personal introduction, reading aloud, repeating sentences, describing images, re-tell lectures, summarisation of written text, and essays.
  • Mimics academic and workplace scenarios.
  • The evaluation is conducted by an AI.

PTE Exam Fees

The PTE exam fees depend on the type of test. Cancelling the test 14 days or more before the exam entitles you to a full refund. Cancellations made between 13 to 8 days prior result in a 50% refund, while those 7 days or less before the test date are non-refundable.

How many times can I take the PTE test?

You can appear in the PTE test multiple times a month. However, you can only take the test up to 12 times a year.
