How Duolingo Scoring Works

The Duolingo English Test uses an adaptive algorithm — questions get harder or easier based on your performance in real time. This means there is no fixed set of questions; the test adjusts throughout to measure your precise level.

SubscoreWhat It Measures
LiteracyReading and writing skills — includes sentence completion and error identification tasks
ComprehensionListening and reading together — assesses overall understanding of written and spoken input
ConversationSpeaking and listening — tests real-time verbal interaction and listening comprehension
ProductionSpeaking and writing combined — evaluates how well you generate language independently

How the Overall Score Is Calculated

Your overall Duolingo score is a single number between 10 and 160. It is generated by the test’s AI model and reflects your performance across all question types during the adaptive test.

Unlike IELTS, there is no manual averaging of section scores. The AI model weighs all your responses — reading, writing, listening, and speaking tasks — together to produce a holistic score. Scores are reported in increments of 5.

Worked Examples

Here is how scores across tasks typically translate into overall results:

  • A candidate who performs consistently well across all four skill areas will score in the 130–160 range (C1–C2 level).
  • A candidate with strong reading and writing but weaker speaking may score in the 105–120 range (B1–B2 level).

A candidate who struggles with listening and production is likely to score between 75 and 95 (A2–B1 level).

Score Validity

Duolingo English Test scores are valid for 2 years from the date you took the test. After this period, your score certificate can no longer be used for university applications, visa applications, or any other official purpose.

If your score expires before you use it, you will need to retake the test. There is no fee waiver or exception for expired scores, even if they were never submitted to an institution.

Result Timeline — When Will You Get Your Score?
