The DET syllabus is built around four proficiency subscores. Each subscore reflects a combination of tasks and is reported alongside the overall score. Institutions may set thresholds for individual subscores.

SubscoreSkills MeasuredScore Range
LiteracyReading and writing ability — understanding written text and producing accurate written responses10–160
ComprehensionListening and reading — understanding spoken and written English across contexts10–160
ConversationListening and speaking — ability to follow and take part in natural spoken exchanges10–160
ProductionWriting and speaking — expressing ideas clearly and fluently in both modes10–160
Note: Each question on the DET contributes to one or more subscores. The overall score is a holistic reflection of all four skill areas combined.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Duolingo English Test syllabus cover?
The DET syllabus covers four core English language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. These are assessed through a variety of adaptive question types and reported as four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production — along with an overall score.
The full test takes approximately 60 minutes. This includes a 45-minute adaptive scored section and a 10-minute video interview, which is shared with institutions but not factored into your numeric score.
No, the video interview and writing sample are not numerically scored. However, they are shared directly with the institutions you apply to and may be considered as part of the admissions process.
A score of 110–120 is typically considered competitive for most undergraduate programs at universities in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Graduate programs and highly selective institutions may require 125 or above. Always check the specific score requirement of each institution.
You can retake the DET as many times as needed, but you must wait at least 21 days between attempts. There is no official cap on the number of attempts.
