DET Exam Pattern

The Duolingo exam assesses the test taker’s proficiency in English across four key skills: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. The evaluation of these skills can be completed in just 1 hour.

Adaptive Test

The adaptive test is an AI-powered assessment that evaluates a candidate’s reading and listening skills. This section automatically adjusts the difficulty of questions based on answers.

  • AI-driven questions where the difficulty of the questions adjusted according to performance
  • No fixed pattern of questions; every test is unique for each test-taker
  • There is no set number of questions. The test ends once the grading engine is confident in your score.
  • Question types include read and complete, listen and type, read aloud, identify real words, speak the answer, write about an image, and listen & select.

Video Interview & Writing Sample

The video interview and writing sample part of the Duolingo English Test allows you to showcase your communication and writing skills. This section is not scored, but universities receive these responses as part of your test report

2 Parts – 10-15 minutes

  • Choose one of the two prompts to write about in about 50 words
  • The prompt could be a general question, an opinion-based statement, or a situational scenario
  • For the video interview round, test takers have to choose one of the two topics to speak for 30-90 seconds.
  • The topics are open-ended to assess how naturally test takers communicate as they evaluate flency.
