Getting your university offer letter is exciting, but booking the right student flight ticket is where a lot of students make avoidable, sometimes costly mistakes. Whether you are hunting for the best student discount flights or just trying to avoid hidden fees, here are five things our AdmitX advisors always check before recommending any flight to a student heading abroad.
This is probably the most overlooked part of international travel planning. Your destination visa is sorted, but what about the countries you’re flying through?
Indian passport holders are required to hold a valid US visa (tourist or transit) to pass through any American airport, even if you never leave the terminal. This applies regardless of how short the layover is or whether you intend to step outside.
Example: A student flying from Delhi → Toronto with a stopover at JFK will be denied boarding at the origin airport without a valid US visa, no exceptions.
The same rule applies to Europe. If your itinerary for a Mumbai to London flight or a Delhi to London flight passes through two or more Schengen countries before reaching your destination, you’ll need a Schengen transit or tourist visa. Many affordable routes from Indian cities route through multiple European hubs, so always verify every country on your path, not just the final stop.
Our recommendation: Unless you already hold the required visa, avoid flights with US layovers. There are excellent connecting options via the Middle East and Southeast Asia that don’t require this added step.
A lower fare doesn’t always mean a better deal. Many airlines, especially on competitive international routes, sell base tickets with no checked baggage included. The extra cost of adding luggage can easily cancel out whatever you saved on the fare itself.
This is why explicitly booking student fare flights or searching for specialised student discount flight tickets is so important. As a student moving abroad for months or a full academic year, you’ll almost certainly need at least two checked bags. Adding these post-booking on the airline’s website or at the airport counter is significantly more expensive than booking an all-inclusive fare to begin with.
Example: Air Canada’s standard India-Canada fare includes only one 23 kg bag. A second bag costs roughly CAD 100 on top, which quickly adds up when converted to INR. When comparing flights, always look at the total cost, including baggage, not just the headline fare
Long layovers are generally uncomfortable and tiring, especially when you’re already carrying heavy luggage. For most students taking a long-haul trip, like an India to Australia flight, a 2–4 hour connection is the sweet spot, enough buffer without the fatigue of a prolonged wait.
That said, a handful of airlines actually turn extended layovers into something worth looking forward to. If your itinerary (such as a Delhi to Australia flight or a trip to Europe) routes through any of these, a long stopover might work in your favour:
Ethiopian Airlines (8+ hrs): The airline arranges a complimentary visa, hotel stay, return airport transfers, and meals for layovers over 8 hours. Addis Ababa has a lot to offer if you want to step out and explore.
EgyptAir (8+ hrs): When no earlier connecting flight is available, and the layover exceeds 8 hours, EgyptAir covers your transit visa, hotel, transfers, and meals. An optional guided tour to the pyramids is available for around USD 50.
SriLankan Airlines (8–12 hrs): Layovers between 8–12 hours include meal vouchers; anything over 12 hours qualifies for hotel accommodation. Indian nationals receive a free 2-day Sri Lanka transit visa. Just pre-book accommodation at least 48 hours before departure.
Airlines understand that students travel with more luggage and more budget constraints than the average passenger. If you are wondering how to get a student discount on flights, you need to look at specific airline programs. Several major carriers have dedicated student flight offers that provide a combination of fare discounts and extra baggage allowance, but many students never think to look for them.
Emirates, for instance, offers up to 10% off plus 10 kg of additional checked baggage on eligible routes. Qatar Airways provides 10% off your first booking, 15% on your second, and 20% from the third booking onward, along with either 10 kg extra or an additional 23 kg piece depending on the route.
When searching for a student discount on flights to India, outbound routes, domestic and international carriers have you covered. The Air India student discount international flights portal offers great savings and baggage perks. Even if you just need a connecting domestic leg to reach your international hub, checking for an IndiGo flight student discount can save you money on base fares.
Other airlines with active student programmes include:
Lufthansa
British Airways
Turkish Airlines
Singapore Airlines
KLM & Air France
Etihad Airways
Cathay Pacific
If you want to know how to avail a student discount on flights, it’s quite simple: eligibility usually requires uploading a valid student ID or your university offer letter at the time of booking on the airline’s official portal. It’s worth checking directly or asking our advisors, the combined savings on fare and baggage can be quite significant.
This one is easy to overlook but matters more than you’d expect on a 10–14-hour-long-haul flight. If you have dietary, religious, or allergy-related food requirements, vegetarian, Jain, halal, lactose-free, or otherwise, most airlines can accommodate you, but only if you request it in advance.
Special meals need to be selected on the airline’s website via the “Manage My Booking” tab before departure, typically at least 24–48 hours ahead. Once you’re on board, the cabin crew won’t have access to additional meal types beyond what was pre-loaded at origin. Taking five minutes to set this up at the time of booking saves a lot of discomfort mid-flight.

Yes, but it is not automatic. You must explicitly book a “Student Fare” or register for an airline’s student club (like the Qatar Airways Student Club or Emirates Student special) to unlock allowances that typically reach 40kg or two checked bags.
We recommend booking your flights 6 to 8 weeks before your intended departure date. However, only book after your student visa has been officially approved to avoid costly cancellation fees.
This is exactly why booking student fare flights is so important. Many official airline student programs offer flexible booking policies. This means if your visa processing takes longer than expected, you can change your travel dates for free or for a drastically reduced penalty fee.
This is a common trap! If you book your domestic flight (e.g., to Delhi or Mumbai) separately from your international ticket, the domestic airline will enforce standard baggage limits (usually 15kg) and charge you heavily for the rest. Always try to book your entire journey on a single itinerary. If you must book separately, look for an IndiGo flight student discount to secure an extra 10kg on that domestic leg.
Generally, no. Student discount flights are already heavily subsidized and come with significant baggage perks. Because of this, airlines usually do not allow you to stack student fares with other seasonal promo codes or credit card offers. The student fare is almost always the better deal anyway!
