It depends on your target universities and programs. Generally, UK/Australia prefer IELTS, while US universities traditionally prefer TOEFL (though most now accept both). Our counselors can help you decide during a free consultation.

Absolutely. The IELTS Bootcamp includes dedicated 1-on-1 speaking simulation sessions with ex-examiners, conducted via Zoom, mimicking the exact environment of the actual speaking test.
The GMAT Focus Edition is shorter (2 hours 15 mins). It removed the analytical writing essay and geometry. It placed a massive new emphasis on Data Insights. It is the version of the GMAT currently available.
You can retake all of them, but there are limits. For example, you can take the GRE once every 21 days (up to 5 times a year). GMAT allows 5 attempts in a rolling 12-month period. IELTS and PTE have no strict limits, but fees add up quickly.
You’ve shortlisted your universities. You know which country you’re going to. And then it hits you — which exam do I actually need?
Getting your exam preparation for studying abroad 2026 right from day one saves you money, time, and a lot of unnecessary stress. Pick the wrong exam and you could delay your entire application by a semester.
You generally need to prove two things to foreign universities: English proficiency and academic aptitude.
1. Language Proficiency Exams (Pick One)
IELTS: The safest bet for the UK, Australia, Ireland, and Canada.
TOEFL: The gold standard if your primary target is the USA.
PTE Academic: Highly popular for Australia and the UK. Entirely computer-graded.
Duolingo (DET): The budget-friendly, at-home option. Widely accepted in the US, but check your specific university’s policy first.
2. Aptitude Exams (Program-Specific)
GRE: Mandatory for most MS programs in the US and Germany (like TU9 universities).
GMAT (Focus Edition): The absolute requirement for top-tier MBA programs globally.
Rule of thumb: Going for an MS in the US? Book the GRE and TOEFL. Targeting a Master’s in the UK or Australia? Book the IELTS or PTE.
Fee: ~₹18,000
Target Score: 6.5 Overall (No band below 6.0)
Pro Tip: Examiners don’t care about a fake accent in the speaking test. Speak naturally and clearly.
TOEFL iBT
Fee: ~₹16,900
Target Score: 90+ (100+ for top universities)
Pro Tip: Practice your typing speed. A slow hunt-and-peck typing style will ruin your writing score.
PTE Academic
Fee: ~₹18,000
Target Score: 59+ (79+ for Australian PR points)
Pro Tip: Don’t shout into the microphone. Speak at a normal conversational volume to avoid voice clipping.
Duolingo English Test
Fee: ~₹5,000
Target Score: 115+
Pro Tip: Look directly at the screen. The AI proctor will cancel your test if you constantly look down at your keyboard.
GRE
Fee: ~₹22,000
Target Score: 315+
Pro Tip: Indian engineers often max out the Quant section but ignore Verbal. Start memorizing vocabulary flashcards on day one.
GMAT (Focus Edition)
Fee: ~₹24,000
Target Score: 645+
Pro Tip: The Focus edition is heavy on Data Insights. Do not underestimate this new section.
Fix Your Weaknesses: Don’t take a full mock test every single day. Identify your weakest section (usually Speaking or Writing) and drill it specifically.
Simulate Real Conditions: Put your phone in another room. Use a timer. Practice at the exact same time of day your real exam is scheduled.
Mistake 1: Choosing the exam based on what friends gave Your friend going to Canada for a diploma took IELTS General. You are going to the US for a Master’s. You need TOEFL or IELTS Academic. Don’t blindly follow the herd.
Mistake 2: Starting with full-length mocks before learning the format If you don’t know the rules of the game, you can’t win. Spend week one just understanding the question types before timing yourself.
Mistake 3: Ignoring the speaking section until the last week We Indians read and write English well, but spoken fluency takes time to build. You can’t cram for the speaking test.
Mistake 4: Not checking if their target university accepts the exam. Imagine scoring a 140 on Duolingo, paying the application fee, and getting an email saying, “We only accept TOEFL.” Always check the university’s international admissions page, or you can ask your counsellor
Mistake 5: Preparing for the wrong version of the exam People still study for the GMAT Classic when the GMAT Focus Edition is the main format running. People book IELTS General Training instead of IELTS Academic. Read the labels carefully.
Mistake 6: Booking the exam date before they’re ready Don’t book the test to “force” yourself to study. It just causes panic. Hit your target score in two consecutive mock tests at home, then book the real exam.
