Post-Study Work Visa- OPT Program

Indian students who are F1 Visa holders can apply for an Optional Training Program (OPT) to pursue jobs in the USA. It is a temporary work permit granted to eligible students for 12 months. For the STEM students, the duration is extended for about 2 more years which can be considered as the biggest benefits for Indian students.

OPT helps students gain relevant work experience in their field of study, which allows them to become eligible for an H1-B visa. 

Types of OPT

There are two types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Pre-Completion OPT

Pre-completion OPT allows students to work for a period while their academic session is running. Also, they can work full-time when they have vacation or official breaks. It provides opportunities for Indian students to pursue part-time jobs in the USA. The pre-completion OPT is also of two types:

Part-Time Pre-Completion OPT 

  • An Indian student can work less or up to 20 hours per week during an academic term, annual vacation, or official break.
  • The student will be entitled to only 50% of the authorised work duration in full-time OPT if they have availed of part-time pre-completion OPT.

Full-Time Pre-Completion OPT

  • An Indian student can work more than 20 hours per week (average 40 hours) during annual vacation or official breaks.
  • The student will NOT be entitled to full-time OPT if they have availed of part-time pre-completion OPT.

Post-Completion OPT

Post-completion OPT allows students to work full-time when they have completed their studies (40 hours per week). 

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for pre-completion and post-completion OPT are in tabulated form, as mentioned below.

Certain STEM students who have completed the full-time OPT and are F1 Visa holders can apply for OPT extension (for 24 months) based on the following criteria:

  • Students must have been granted an OPT. 
  • Students must apply for OPT STEM extension during the valid period of full-time OPT.
  • Students must have earned a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a school accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting agency and certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
