Post-Study Work Options for International Students in Australia

Australia offers several post-study work options for international students who have completed their studies in the country. These options allow graduates to stay in Australia and gain valuable work experience, enhancing their skills and employability. Here are some of the post-study work options available in Australia:

1. Post-Study Work Visa (Subclass 485)

The Post-Study Work Visa in Australia or PSW Australia (Subclass 485) is a temporary visa offered by the Australian government to international students who have completed their studies in Australia. It is designed to provide an opportunity for graduates to gain work experience in their field of study, enhancing their skills and employability. The Subclass 485 visa has two streams: the Graduate Work Stream and the Post-Study Work Stream, each with its own eligibility criteria and visa duration.

  • Graduate Work Stream: For graduates with qualifications related to occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). The visa duration is usually 18 months.
  • Post-Study Work Stream: For graduates who completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree at an Australian university. The visa duration varies based on the highest qualification completed, providing an opportunity to stay in Australia for up to four years.

2. Employer-Sponsored Visas

International graduates may also explore employer-sponsored visas if they have secured a job offer from an Australian employer. Some of the common employer-sponsored visa subclasses include:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage visa (Subclass 482): This visa allows skilled workers to work in Australia for up to four years. Employers must sponsor the applicant and meet certain requirements.
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) and Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 187): These permanent visas enable skilled workers to live and work in Australia permanently if they are nominated by an employer in a regional or non-regional area, respectively.

3. Skilled Independent Visas

International graduates who possess skills and qualifications in high-demand occupations may be eligible for skilled independent visas, which do not require employer sponsorship. The General Skilled Migration (GSM) program includes visas such as:

  • Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189): A points-tested visa that allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia permanently.
  • Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190): Similar to the Subclass 189, but applicants must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government.

4. Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) – Regional

This is an extension of the Subclass 485 visa specifically for students who have studied in regional areas of Australia. It provides additional incentives for international graduates who choose to live and work in regional areas.

5. State-Specific Nomination Programs

Some Australian states and territories have their own nomination programs that can provide pathways to permanent residency for international graduates who have studied and worked in that particular region.

It’s essential for international students to research and understand the specific visa options and requirements that apply to their individual circumstances.
