Study in Finland for Indian Students: Intakes

The academic year in Finland begins in September every year, which is standard for all Finnish universities. The commencement of the academic year marks Fall intake, whereas Spring intake is a secondary intake and begins in January/February.

Eligibility Criteria for MS in Finland

The higher education system in Finland consists of two interrelated components: University and the University of Applied Sciences (UAS). Both of these sectors offer academic degrees to international students.

The basic differences are:

  • Universities offer academic degrees on Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral level
  • UAS offers more practically oriented Bachelors and Masters degrees.

For masters in Finland, students need to have completed a 3-4 year bachelors degree (equivalent to 180 ECTS). 

For UAS masters, there is an additional requirement of at least 2-year of work experience after completing a bachelor’s degree.

Academic Proficiency:

  • A minimum GPA of 65-75% is required on a scale of 1-10.
  • Specific subject-related knowledge and skills are required.

 

English Proficiency:

  • Indian students applying for masters courses must have the following English language proficiency.
  • As the majority masters programs are taught in English, applicants to English-taught programs do not need to demonstrate Finnish or Swedish language skills.
  • English language proficiency may differ from university to university.
  • TOEFL iBT: A minimum score of 90-100
  • IELTS: A minimum average of 5.5-6.5 or equivalent

Student-Visa for Finland

To pursue Masters in Finland, Indian students must apply for a student resident permit (permit A) at least three months before the commencement of the academic program.

There are two ways by which Indian students can apply for a student residence permit:

  1. e-service Enter Finland
  2. Offline/paper application

 

Application for Student Residence Permit (Permit A)

Indian students must apply for a student resident permit for Finland as soon as they receive an acceptance letter from the university or the University of Applied Sciences. Permit A, or student residence permit, grants a stay to international students in Finland for higher studies that lead to the completion of a master’s degree. 

International students are also required to have a Visa D in order to get entry into Finland and obtain a student residence permit at the collection point.

Application for both Visa D and Permit A can be made together on the e-service Enter Finland portal.

To apply offline, applicants can download an application form on the e-service Enter Finland and apply for a residence permit.

Application Process

Indian students can apply for a student residence permit and Visa D together either through the service Enter Finland portal or through a paper application. After successful completion of the application process, they are required to visit the local embassy/consulate along with all the necessary documents for the verification process.

Once verification is done, the embassy/consulate will issue Visa D, with the help of which applicants can visit Finland to collect their residence permit from the checkpoint.

Application Cost

The application fee for the student residence permit is 350 EUR or INR 31,000 (online application) and 450 EUR or INR 40,000 (offline/paper application).

Post-Study Work Visa for Indian Students

Indian students who have completed masters in Finland do not need to apply for a residence permit separately. They can apply for an extended license on the basis of a degree before their student permit expires. Students are allowed to continue working or start a new job already before the extended license has been issued. 

Students are needed to attach the degree certificate to their application as soon as they receive it.

Application Process

Indian students can apply for extended residence permits either through the service Enter Finland portal or through a paper application. 

After they have applied to Enter Finland, employers must add terms of employment and other required documents to their application using Enter Finland for Employers.

After successful completion of the application process, students are required to visit the Finnish Immigration Service to prove their identity, along with all the necessary documents.

The application fee for the post-study work visa is 170 EUR or INR 15,393.
