Is Ireland part of the UK or EU?

The Republic of Ireland is an EU member state since 1973. Ireland is not a part of the UK. The UK comprises of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Ireland is also not a part of the Schengen Area which allows borderless travel. Therefore, to travel in the Schengen Area, students will need to apply for a separate visa for one of the member states.

Larger cities in Ireland have excellent public transport infrastructure and most residents use it for their daily commute. For those living in more isolated rural areas, public transport may be less accessible and residents might need to rely on other modes of transport.

English is the predominant language spoken in most parts of the country. While Irish is taught in schools and has a special status as the national and first official language, it is not a requirement for everyday life or for staying in Ireland.

Ireland has an excellent healthcare system, ranked #11 in the world according to a 2018 Lancet study. It is provided through a combination of public and private healthcare systems. The public healthcare system in Ireland is known as the Health Service Executive (HSE).
