APS Certificate for Germany: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re planning to study in Germany, especially as an Indian student, obtaining the APS Certificate is one of the first and most crucial steps in your application process. The ‘Akademische Prüfstelle’ or (APS) is responsible for verifying your academic documents and ensuring their authenticity before you apply for a German student visa. This certificate acts as a green signal that your qualifications meet the standards required by German universities.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through what the APS Certificate is, why it’s important, who needs it, and how to apply, so you can start your journey to Germany with confidence.

What is an APS Certificate?

The APS Certificate, short for Akademische Prüfstelle Certificate, is an official document issued after the verification of your academic records by the APS office.

It is mandatory for students from countries like India, Vietnam, and China who wish to pursue higher education in Germany. The purpose of this certificate is to confirm that your academic qualifications are genuine and meet the admission standards set by German universities.

Without the APS Certificate, you won’t be eligible to apply for a student visa for Germany. It acts as a stamp of credibility, ensuring that your educational background aligns with Germany’s academic expectations.

Who Needs an APS Certificate?

The APS Certificate is primarily required for students from specific countries, including India, China, Vietnam, and Mongolia, who wish to pursue higher education in Germany. If you’re an Indian student applying for a bachelor’s or master’s degree at a German university, obtaining the APS Certificate is mandatory before you can apply for a student visa.

This requirement applies to those who are-

  • Planning to study in public or private universities in Germany.
  • Applying for degree programs (UG/PG) that require a visa.
  • Attending German-taught or English-taught programs.
  • The duration of the course is more than 90 days.

However, students who are going to Germany for PhD, short-term exchange programs, or those with DAAD scholarships may be exempt from this requirement. It’s always best to check with the German consulate or APS India’s official website for the most recent guidelines, as exemptions can vary by case.

Why is the APS Certificate Important for Studying in Germany?

The APS Certificate plays a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and legitimate transition for international students into the German education system. Its primary function is to verify the authenticity of your academic documents, such as transcripts, degree certificates, and mark sheets, before you apply to German universities or for a student visa.

Germany places a high value on academic standards, and this verification process helps prevent fraudulent applications, ensuring that only genuinely qualified students move forward in the admission process. For Indian students in particular, the APS Certificate is mandatory for the student visa application, meaning you won’t be able to proceed without it, even if you’ve secured admission to a German university.

What to Do After Receiving the APS Certificate?

After receiving your APS Certificate, there are several important steps to follow in order to continue your journey toward studying in Germany.

Apply for a Student Visa
Once you have the certificate, you can proceed with submitting your visa application to the nearest German consulate or embassy. Along with the APS Certificate, you’ll need to provide additional documents such as your university admission letter, proof of financial support, passport, and health insurance.

Secure Your Admission at a German University
With the APS Certificate in hand, make sure to finalise your admission to a German university. This may include accepting an offer, submitting any final documents, and confirming your place in your program. You will also need to pay the semester fees or any necessary deposits as instructed by the university.

Organise Financial Documentation
In addition to your visa application, you’ll need to prove that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself during your studies in Germany. This can be done through a blocked account (Sperrkonto) that holds the required amount of money (€11,904 or INR 11.59 Lakhs per year) for the duration of your stay.

Prepare for Travel

Once your visa is approved and your university admission is confirmed, you can start preparing for your trip to Germany. This includes booking flights, arranging accommodation, and understanding the cultural and practical aspects of living in Germany. You’ll also need to familiarise yourself with the German healthcare system and arrange health insurance for your stay.

Register with the Local Authorities
Upon arrival in Germany, one of the first tasks is to register your residence with the local authorities (Einwohnermeldeamt). This is required by law, and it’s essential for obtaining your residence permit. You will also need to open a German bank account if you haven’t already done so.
